In 1984, I thought it was a trip to meet more family. Little did I know, it was the start of lifelong passion. Her name was Dovie. (Isn’t that the sweetest name for a little lady in her eighties?) She wanted to show me her latest project, a lovely bundle of random fabrics that she was quilting by hand into an amazing work of art. I was instantly hooked.

Following her lead, I spent many years hand quilting for my family. My sweet husband even made for me a wooden quilting frame that hung from our dining room ceiling. Few things made my heart smile like seeing one of our children cuddle up with their favorite blankie. With little ones running around, I moved from the ceiling frame to a lap frame. Years went by and life got busy but my love of quilting continued. Eventually, I began quilting on my domestic sewing machine. Wow, my machine was never built for that much fabric!

Fast forward to 2015 when I discovered longarm quilting. I was immediately mesmerized. Oh, the possibilities! I played on one at every opportunity. Mrs. Claus even left a note in my Christmas stocking.

I guess my husband tired of hearing me drone on about how cool longarm quilters are and how much I wanted one. In 2018, he pulled the truck over and said, “Just go get it.” Music to my ears!!! Now any free moments are spent quilting on my APQS Millie with Intelliquilter on a 14 foot frame.

What a joy to take a bundle of fabric, lovingly stitched together, and turn it into a family heirloom. Quilts share a family’s love and history to connect generations across time and miles.

While I won’t be quilting full time until I retire, right now I spend days off in my “room of joy” creating treasures. Oft times, my sweet grandchildren will be playing at my feet while I quilt away recalling sweet Dovie and the love of creating she instilled in me.
